September 21- Garden spider
21Sep10
My husband found this yellow and black garden spider, in, appropriately, our garden. We were both fascinated, watching this huge, colorful spider hanging out in her web. My husband tried, unsuccessfully, to feed her, but I have a feeling that she is much better at catching bugs than he is… But, I am happy to report that these are evidently, helpful, non-agressive spiders. I guess many people welcome them in their gardens for their ability to keep garden pests to a minimum.
And if the photo above didn’t creep you out enough, here’s a nice close-up of our new garden friend.
The body of this particular spider was pretty big- about the same size of the tip of my index finger.

Lovely creepy crawley Erica. Thanks for you comments, I have a gang of Lorikeets in the tree outside our front door, right now squalking up a storm. Question on your blog. I have loaded it into Blog Surfer in wordpress but I don’t get automatic post notification for you, like I do others. I just noticed that your comments aren’t wordpress based. So I have to go to google reader to see your new posts but I like to answer WordPress comments and make comments on wordpress blogs via Blog Surfer. your comments seem to come straight from your hotmail addr. can you comment on my posts from wordpress?? sorry thought I had this sorted but apparently not!
Ron
Ron- I have no idea- that is really strange. My blog is a wordpress blog and I follow your’s and others’ blogs through my wordpress site. I will check my settings to make sure I don’t have anything set up goofy (sometimes I check or uncheck things without really knowing what they are). But I’ve been using the “My Subscriptions” feature in WordPress to follow blogs… so you would think it would be seemless. I will check it out.
I like spiders as a rule, never seen one with the markings of a yellow jacket like this. Nice shots and how nice of your husband to try and feed it.
